It was a tough weekend for the team and I at Sydney. Defiantly didn’t achieve the results we were aiming for but that’s the beauty of racing in such a competitive category.
After having such a dominant weekend in Townsville and strong showing at our Supercars Championship debut at Queensland Raceway, we were quietly confident we would perform well at Sydney Motorsport Park. But that certainly wasn’t the case for us.
The Bigmate Racing Supercar didn’t roll out of the truck with a winning setup and it put us well and truly on the back foot for the majority of the weekend. Friday being super busy with only one practice session before Qualifying and then race one didn’t give us a great opportunity to understand what the real issue with the car was and we weren’t able to get the car in it’s setup window to gain optimum performance. This showed struggling to place inside the top five in race one after a good start mixing it with the front guys.
Saturday night was a stressful one. My poor engineer Wes McDougall was crunching numbers all night, but it paid off as we were able to turn our performance around and go from 9th to 2nd in race three Saturday afternoon. It was a huge relief for the team and I and no better way to bounce back than with a podium.
The taste of the podium unfortunately didn’t last long after attempting to run three wide into turn one after the safety car restart in race four on Sunday. Being on the outside I had no hope but at the time I rolled the dice and come off second best losing a heap of crucial positions and fell outside the top ten. With old tyres it was tough to fight back through the pack but fortunately I managed to work my way back to 8th and salvage some valuable series points.
It was certainly one of those character building weekends for us. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and really looking forward to bouncing back into form at the Sandown 500.
We still lead the series points and I am so lucky to have such an incredible team, family, sponsors and supporters right behind me in the title fight and cannot wait to see what we can achieve at the next event.
